![]() ![]() My personal preference is a stronger blend, but they only had medium roast. ![]() I can only ding them for the weakness of the coffee. They had free-range eggs (boiled and scrambled), pancakes and waffles already made, Canadian bacon and sausage, steel-cut oats, fresh yogurt, three juice selections, and multiple tea flavors. The quality of the food was way above average, steering away from the usual junk food danishes and packaged oatmeal. The fruit was fresh, the offerings were many, and the seating areas fairly plentiful. Breakfast (4.75 out of 5): We were pleasantly surprised by the attention given to the breakfast. Lastly, the workout room seemed modern and well kept. Kids might like the entertainment of the constant air traffic. This made it very hard for us to have any conversation. 3.) Airplanes fly nearly directly over the hotel and pool about every 45 seconds apart and are very loud when take off is eastbound. There was a better wind on the second morning that allowed us to stay comfortably in the pool area. On the first morning we were invaded by dozens of flies from the dumpster and had to bail. 2.) Someone thought it would be a good idea to put the dumpster for the hotel about a short stone’s throw from the pool area. It would have been a better design to have the pool on the south side of the building for maximum enjoyment. 1.) Being on the west side of the property, the pool is in the shadow of the 6-story hotel building until afternoon (this was in April). Although the pool itself was in great shape with very clean water, we found some serious flaws in the pool area. We are morning swimmers / sun bathers to avoid the crowds. ![]() Pool (2 out of 5) and amenities: The pool size was about average for a non-resort chain hotel. We migrated the stacked towels from there onto the bed so they wouldn’t get damp from the heavy shower mist. The stand-up shower was very spacious and with excellent water pressure and temperature control, but they put the towel rack in the shower stall. The sink faucet is positioned in such a way that it easily spills water all over the counter. For larger people, one would have to actually enter the shower and reach over to close the door. We soon found out that the bathroom area is dysfunctional for two people, and the door that separates the sink from the toilet and shower almost hits the toilet, so it’s awkward to get into the bathroom and close the door. The bed is pillow top and very comfortable. Everything in the room seemed very clean by housekeeping. It’s a studio with a living space (couch, small dining / work table, 1/3 size fridge, but no microwave). Initial room impressions (3.75 out of 5): The Hyatt Place room was very spacious, and aside from the initial clinical smell of cleanliness, we were very happy with the room. The lobby and hallways were in perfect shape. They got us a room on the sixth floor (the top floor of the hotel) looking south. The people behind the desk were friendly and able to answer any questions. Arrival and hotel cleanliness (4 out of 5): Online checkin cut the front desk experience to less than a minute. Sound insulation seemed good as these sounds were muffled, and we also hardly heard a peep from our neighbors on the sides or below us. The only things to complain about were: The lack-luster view from the south side rooms and the constant noise from eastbound air traffic taking off every 45 seconds. The Hyatt Place by the airport had an excellent location to reach all these places. Sunday we opted for lunch and IKEA after our morning swim. Location (4 out of 5): On Saturday we had places in Scottsdale to go, and also decided to visit the Desert Botanical Gardens. We also called the front desk to make sure the pool was open and in good order. There was no extra ‘resort fee’ when we booked a high-floor room at the Hyatt Place Tempe Phoenix Airport. Also utilizing Google Earth satellite images for pool size, we ended up with a AAA rate of $103 / night plus tax. Booking (5 out of 5): We hunted online with Expedia, Travelocity, Airbnb, Google, and individual hotel chain websites. We were looking for a pool that was large enough to do some calorie-burning laps, and lay out in the morning Phoenix sun to make some vitamin D and get a couple of shades less white. Our travel goal: This was a weekend warrior trip to escape the perpetual cold winter nights that keep coming back to spring of mile-high central Arizona. ![]()
